Laundry may appear straightforward, but there are common, preventable mistakes that can cause lasting damage to your clothing.  To ensure your clothes stay fresh and last longer, here are five common laundry errors and tips on how to avoid them.

  1. Overloading the washing machine

The mistake: Cramming too many articles of clothing, reduces how well it can function. Preventing circulation of water and detergent and ultimately failing to properly clean the load.

How to avoid it: Leave enough room in the drum for clothes to move around freely.  Ideally filling the washer about three-quarters full.

  2. Too much detergent

The mistake: More detergent doesn't always mean cleaner clothes.  Excess detergent can leave residue on fabrics.

How to avoid it: Follow the recommended amount, and use a measuring cup to ensure accuracy.

  3. Ignoring care labels

The mistake: Washing all clothes together, the same way can lead to issues such as shrinkage, and fabric damage.

How to avoid it: Always check the care labels before washing, follow the recommended temperature, washing cycle and dryer instructions.  Grouping clothes with similar requirements can increase your efficacy while doing laundry as well.

  4. Leaving wet clothes in the washer

The mistake: Leaving wet clothes in the washing unit, can lead to mildew, horrible odors, and potential bacteria growth.

How to avoid it: Setting a timer to remind you when the laundry is done can be a simple solution to avoid this issue.

  5. Using fabric softener when it’s not needed

The mistake: Certain types of towels, fabrics and athletic wear can be left with fabric softener residue.  Reducing their absorbency and breathability.

How to avoid it: Use fabric softener sparingly, and ensure that the sensitive fabrics are separated when organizing laundry.

Avoiding these common laundry mistakes can keep your clothes fresher, for longer.  Following proper techniques will save you money, time and frustration in the long run.  Feel free to come on down to Monster Laundry!
